“In typical Filipino fashion,

my aunt expressed her love not through words

of encouragement or affectionate embraces, but through food.

Food was how she communicated.

Food was how she found her place in the world.”

Arsenic and Adobo
(Mia P. Manansala)

This is Mia P. Manansala (Instagram: @mpmthewriter ) debut installment to Tita Rosies Kitchen Mystery Series featuring Filipino-American culture! The theme is a mix of balanced diaspora, culinary romance-comedy and cozy mystery.

Why I love this novel:

🏳️‍🌈DIVERSITY! Lila, is Filipina, living in Shady Palmy w/ characters who are all different races and orientation;
🥘the PINOY FOOD! Yes, we indulge in tons of Filipino dishes and desserts;
🇵🇭PINOY AUNTIES and dog LONGANISA! Lila’s ninangs (godmothers) April, Mae, and June are hilarious! They sound just like my family members! Really a delightful banter! And Lila`s dog is named Longanisa! Come on, how cute is that! Just like the sweet tasting Filipino round sausage.
🔪It's a COZY MYSTERY - it's cute! A pleasant journey full of family, friends and new acquaintances.

My nitpick though --- there are several instances in this book that seemed unrealistic to me; like Lila’s amateur sleuth, which was a bit silly, redundant and dangerous 🕵🏻‍♀️ no spoilers!

At the end of the book, I had a few unanswered questions reg. side plots, characters, and “bringing a potential love interest to the next level”-moment. I hope to get clarity in the future instalments! 😉

Overall, I loved the Filipino-American representation. Although I am Filipino-German, I was very much able to see so much of myself and my family in Lila - except for the murdered food critic ex-boyfriend, of course.

The strongest message that hit home: The message of Filipinos being all about community - which can be expressed in the Tagalog term “Pakikisama” “Pakikipagkapwa” (learn more on the German-Filipino Podcast @henerasyon2 ) - is a very significant trait in the Filipino culture. A trait that implies the sense of togetherness in a group and camaraderie and the cause of one being socially accepted. This message was perfectly conveyed in the story.

Very recommendable read! Light, cozy Fil-Am mystery with people you would want to have as friends (except the murder!), a dash of Filipino KILIG-love and Filipino food delights (watch your cholesterol and high blood!)

“I hustled back to the kitchen to prepare some salabat.

The hot ginger tea would cure anything that ailed you,

and I'd made a few modifications to boost the flavor and health profile.
I set the electric kettle and pulled out the jar of ginger,

turmeric, honey, cayenne, and calamansi,

the last ingredient adding a refreshing hit of citrus tang.”
